The Culture of Volunteer Work and its Contribution to Developing Social Skills among High School Students

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the culture of volunteer work and its contribution to developing social skills among secondary school students. This was achieved by revealing the students' level of awareness of volunteer work culture, demonstrating its contribution to developing their social skills, namely cooperation, social communication, and empathy, as well as identifying the most significant obstacles hindering the development of a volunteer work culture and exploring appropriate ways to overcome these obstacles.

The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach that is deemed suitable for its nature and objectives. A questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample of 70 secondary school female students.

The results of the study showed that the sample members expressed a high degree of agreement on the first dimension related to the degree of awareness of the culture of volunteer work, where the arithmetic mean reached (3.49), while the degree of agreement was moderate on the second dimension related to the challenges and obstacles facing the dissemination of the culture of volunteer work, where it was shown that the overall arithmetic mean on the second dimension reached (3.35). Also, as for the last dimension related to ways of development and overcoming obstacles, it was shown that the overall arithmetic mean for the degree of response of the study sample members was (3.70), which indicates a high degree of agreement.

The study recommended the importance of promoting a culture of volunteer work among high school students through awareness programs, integrating volunteer activities into the school environment, and developing students’ social skills through organized volunteer practices, while working to remove obstacles that limit their participation in volunteer work.
