Abstract

The research aims to clarify how Ibn Jarir Al-Tabari dealt with the interpretation of the Companions and the Followers، with applied examples، and to explain the reasons for the preference of the saying of the Follower to the saying of the Companion in his interpretation.

The research dealt with various places in Al-Tabari's interpretation where the preference of the saying of the Follower to the saying of the Companion was applied.

In this research، I relied on the inductive-analytical method.

The research reached important results، the most important of which are:

1/ There is a large number of narrations of the Followers in the interpretation.

2/ Ibn Jarir deals with the interpretation of the predecessors as a single layer in the "judgmental interpretation"، which depends on opinions; So he gives precedence to the saying of the Follower over that of the Companion and gives weight to it if his saying is supported with preponderates.

3/ In the interpretation of the narration – that is related to the unseen information and the reasons for revelation which have no supporting presumptions – the statement of the Companion is preferred; as they have more knowledge of the revelation.

4/ Ibn Jarir's way of dealing with the classes of the predecessors require comprehensive induction and extensive scientific study.
