Arabic Dialects Mentioned in the Book of "Al-Tadhil Wal-Takmil"

Abstract

This research aimed to enumerate, classify, document, and study the impact of the Arabic dialects mentioned by Abu Hayyan Al-Andalusi in his book Al-Tadhīl Wal-Takmil fī Bāb Al-Iʿrāb (Supplement and Completion in the Chapter of Parsing). It also sought to elucidate Abu Hayyan's stance on these dialects. The research adopted a descriptive-analytical approach and addressed nine issues: the parsing of the proper noun Imraʾ, the parsing of the dual case, the parsing of kilā and kilta, the parsing of sinīn (years), the parsing of the accusative case of the feminine plural, the parsing of the six interrogative pronouns, the parsing of a descriptive noun used as a subject without a predicate in the dual and plural cases, the parsing of the objects of "inna" and its associates, and the deletion of overt parsing endings. The research concluded that Abu Hayyan did not, for the most part, differentiate between Classical Arabic and the dialects of the Arabs in his grammatical rules. Also, he frequently referred to Arabic dialects in his Al-Tadhīl Wal-Takmil when discussing parsing issues, and he generally accepted the steady Arabic dialects in the chapter of parsing, without contradicting each other.
