Abstract

This research studied machine names in the Jazan region, and it was limited to standard weights, with some names showing a change in weight while their meaning remained on the measurement. I have recited the words in this research from their sources coinciding with my previous knowledge of some of them. The number of names studied in this paper has reached forty-four words. I divided them it into three sections; the first topic: weight (مِفْعَل) with two requirements under it, and the second topic weight (مِفْعَلة) and included two requirements, then the third topic weight (مِفْعَال). The research ended with a number of results, including:

1- That these names were popular with people; the public and the intellectuals in their daily use of the dialect. Because of the prevalence of their popularity among them, these names are thought to be colloquial and sunken in its vernacularism, while in fact they are clearly Arabic names.

2-The research proved that some of the names were not affected in their original structures with any change, and are used now exactly as stated in linguistic dictionaries.

3-The names whose structure has changed are related to eloquent use, but the tongue changes, changing times, socializing, and cultural development have affected them, so their weights have changed, but they remain, in the end, Arabic, and a language addressed to Arabs.

In this research, I have relied on the origin of these names acquired from linguistic dictionaries, while neglecting the names which have no meaning in linguistic dictionaries, and I also left the audio names for lack of controls. I ask God for success and imbursement.
