Linguistic substitution in the book Description of the Arabian Peninsula by Al-Hamdani

Abstract

This research dealt with the issue of linguistic substitution in the book Description of the Arabian Peninsula by Al-Hamdani, and it aims to clarify what the book, Description of the Arabian Peninsula by Al-Hamdani contains of substitutions that are the subject of disagreement between linguists and Al-Hamdani’s opinion about it and the extent to which it agrees or disagrees with the opinions of its predecessors and successors, commenting and weighting as much as possible, and knowing the places in which it was common Substitution, and the tribes that I spoke with, and Muwaffaq al-Hamdani of them.

In writing this research, I relied on the descriptive analytical method, and important results were reached, the most important of which are:

1/ Al-Hamdani presented linguistic issues; Phonetic, morphological, grammatical, and others.

2/ His mastery of the basics and morphological rules, and his good knowledge of the dialects of the tribes.

3/ He tends to shorten some linguistic issues, and this is due to the nature of the book, as it is a geographical book, not a book on language.

4/ Al-Hamdani’s ruling on the language of substituting the meme from the lam in the definition of lack of eloquence, agrees with the ruling of Ibn Jinni, who judged it as abnormal, and was unique in attributing this language to the tribes of Ja’dah, Aak, and Tihama.
