Abstract

This research deals with the illusion represented in riddles, blinding, puns, and metaphors in Ibn Al-Roumi's poetry. It is a style abundant in the poetry of Ibn Al-Roumi, who was famous for his sophistication in speech styles and imagery. Illusion is a method different from exposé, and it is more informative in its context, more eloquent in its wonderful pictorial imagery, and leads to the meaning in a more beautiful and precise way, such as when riddling is an euphemism for what is ashamed of, or an exposition of the generosity, courage, or the beauty of the praiseworthy, or an exposition of his/her slander. The research consisted of three sections. The first section dealt with illusion between two meanings in one word, the second section discussed illusion between two meanings and two words, while the third section presented illusion between more than two words and meanings in Ibn Al-Roumi's poetry. The research concluded that illusion has a role in drawing the poetic image, expanding the denotation and enriching the poetic imagination of Ibn Al-Roumi.
